Aluminium Conductor Composite Core or ACCC is a type of "high-temperature low-sag" (HTLS) overhead power line conductor manufactured by more than 20 international conductor manufacturers. CTC Global (formerly Composite Technology Corporation) developed the patented technology. The ACCC conductor's composite core is manufactured according to ASTM B987 / B987M - 17 “Standard Specification for Carbon Fiber Thermoset Polymer Matrix Composite Core (CFC) for use in Overhead Electrical Conductors.”
It is able to carry approximately twice as much current as a conventional aluminium-conductor steel-reinforced cable (ACSR) cable of the same size and weight, making it popular for retrofitting an existing electric power transmission line without needing to change the existing towers and insulators.
In addition to the labor and materials savings, such an upgrade can be performed as a "maintenance and repair" operation, without the lengthy permitting process required for new construction.
ACCC is designed to operate continuously at elevated temperatures and has excellent sag characteristics through out the operating range. ACCC is the right choice if reconductoring of the existing lines are required to enhance the transmission capacity. This conductor offers Very loaw line losses and excellent self-damping properties.Because of it's high strength to weight ratio, ACCC can be used with long spans which brings down the cost of structures in new lines.
ACCC Conductor consists of a hybrid carbon and glass fiber core which is wrapped with trapezoidal shaped aluminum strands.
Compared with normal conductors, the ACCC conductor has the following advantages:
Light Weight: the density of ACCC is: 1.9g/cm3, and the normal steel wire is 7.78g/cm3. The ACCC conductor is 20% to 30% lighter than the same aluminum section area ACSR. So it will reduced around 25% tower weight during the old transmission line reformed.
Higher Intensity: the tensile strength of normal steel wire is 1240MPa, and extra high intensity is 1600MPa, however the carbon composite core of ACCC is at least 2100MPa, 2400MPa, it is much larger than steel wire.
Anti-Corrosion: The conductor is stranded by trapezoidal soft aluminum wire, to combine between the single lines, reduced the area section between outer layer and the outside environment, meanwhile to protect the core reinforced, with reducing the corrosion to the environment, it reduces the corona loss as well. Meanwhile, the core itself has no potential difference between aluminum wire and insulation structure, it won't produce electrochemical corrosion, so that it can be used under any extreme environment with a much longer life.
Higher Conductivity: Since the ACCC conductor is stranded by trapezoidal soft aluminum wire, the conductivity of its soft aluminum wire is about 63%IACS, while ACSR is only 61%.
Lower Sag: the coefficient of linear expansion of steel wire is 11.5*10-6/℃, and the fiber composite core is only 1.6*10-6/℃, reducing the sag of ACCC conductor.
Higher Operation Temperature and Current Capacity: compared with normal ACSR, the ACCC conductor is made by trapezoidal aluminum wire, twisted compact, and the section area of aluminum is around 29% larger than the same size of ACSR, enhancing 29% current capacity. Meanwhile, the core is combined with epoxy group and fiber, which can be of high temperature resistance, so the operating temperature of ACCC conductor is about 160℃, while the normal ACSR is only 70℃.
